Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Paro – Exploration of Rinpung Dzong and Taa Dzong (National Museum)

Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by our local representative and transferred to your hotel in Paro. After a brief rest, embark on a cultural exploration of some of Paro’s most iconic landmarks. First, visit the impressive Rinpung Dzong, a fortress-monastery built in the 16th century. This massive structure is an architectural marvel, with its traditional Bhutanese design and intricate woodwork. The Dzong also serves as the administrative and religious center of the Paro district. As you explore the courtyards and temples within, you will gain insight into Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Next, head to Taa Dzong, located on a hill above Rinpung Dzong. Originally built as a watchtower to protect Paro from invasions, this unique circular building now houses the National Museum of Bhutan. Here, you can explore fascinating exhibits showcasing Bhutanese art, history, and culture, including ancient thangkas (Buddhist paintings), traditional costumes, and religious artifacts. The museum also offers panoramic views of the Paro Valley, making it a perfect spot for photography.

In the evening, you can take a leisurely stroll through Paro town, exploring its quaint streets and local markets. Return to your hotel for a relaxing evening and prepare for the trekking adventure that begins the next day. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.

Day 2Trek from Paro to Jele Dzong – Forest Walk and Ancient Fortress

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the trailhead to begin your trek to Jele Dzong. The trek starts with a gradual ascent through dense forests of rhododendron and pine trees, which are especially beautiful in the spring when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. As you walk, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of nature, with the possibility of spotting local wildlife such as pheasants and mountain deer.

The trek continues uphill, offering glimpses of the Paro Valley below as you climb higher. By early afternoon, you’ll reach Jele Dzong, an ancient fortress perched on a ridge overlooking the valley. This dzong, though relatively small compared to others in Bhutan, has a unique history and offers breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari on a clear day. Explore the ruins of the fortress and visit the small temple inside, which is still used by local monks.

After visiting Jele Dzong, you will set up camp nearby, surrounded by serene mountain landscapes. Enjoy a warm meal under the stars and relax in the peaceful atmosphere. Overnight in a tented camp near Jele Dzong.

Day 3Trek from Jele Dzong to Jangchulakha – Ridges and Mountain Views

After a hearty breakfast, continue your trek towards Jangchulakha. The trail takes you along ridges that offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you ascend, the air becomes cooler, and the landscape shifts to more alpine terrain, with fewer trees and more open spaces covered in dwarf rhododendrons and juniper.

The ridges provide breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, with the snow-capped peaks towering in the distance. On a clear day, you may even catch sight of Mount Jomolhari and other prominent peaks along the Bhutan-Tibet border. As you walk, you’ll pass through yak herder settlements, where you can observe the nomadic lifestyle of the highland herders who live in the mountains during the summer months.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at your campsite near Jangchulakha, set against the backdrop of rolling hills and vast mountain vistas. Spend the evening enjoying the fresh mountain air and the serenity of the natural surroundings. Overnight in camp near Jangchulakha.

Day 4Trek from Jangchulakha to Jimilangtsho Lake – Yaks and Mountain Lakes

Today’s trek takes you to the stunning Jimilangtsho Lake, a high-altitude lake known for its pristine waters and tranquil beauty. After breakfast, begin your trek through undulating terrain, crossing several ridges and passing more yak herder camps. The trail offers more expansive views of the Himalayan range, with opportunities to spot blue sheep and other mountain wildlife along the way.

As you approach Jimilangtsho Lake, you’ll notice the landscape becoming more dramatic, with rugged mountains reflecting in the crystal-clear waters of the lake. The lake itself is surrounded by grassy meadows and rocky outcrops, making it a perfect spot to relax and take in the serene environment.

Set up camp near the lake and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as the sun sets behind the mountains. In the evening, you can sit by the campfire and listen to stories from your trekking guide or simply enjoy the star-filled sky. Overnight in camp by Jimilangtsho Lake.

Day 5Trek from Jimilangtsho to Thimphu – Forests, Farms, and City Exploration

After enjoying a peaceful morning by Jimilangtsho Lake, you will begin your descent towards Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. The trail takes you through beautiful forests of pine and oak, gradually descending into more fertile farmland as you approach the outskirts of Thimphu. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages and terraced fields, offering a glimpse into the traditional rural lifestyle of Bhutanese farmers.

Upon reaching Thimphu, you will have some time to explore the city’s attractions. You may choose to visit the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and the summer residence of the monastic body, or the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in memory of Bhutan’s third king. Thimphu is a unique capital, blending traditional Bhutanese architecture with modern conveniences, and you’ll have the chance to visit its local markets, cafes, and cultural sites.

In the late afternoon, you will drive back to Paro for your final night in Bhutan. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your group, celebrating the completion of your trek. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.
