Upon arriving at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by our local representative and transferred to your hotel. After settling in and resting for a while, your journey through Bhutan begins with a visit to the Rinpung Dzong, an iconic fortress-monastery that overlooks the Paro Valley. This 17th-century structure is a fine example of traditional Bhutanese architecture and holds deep historical significance, having been a site of several important battles. You’ll have the opportunity to explore its stunning courtyards and temples, and perhaps witness monks going about their daily rituals.
Afterward, enjoy a leisurely walk through Paro town, where you can visit local shops, cafes, and traditional handicraft markets, immersing yourself in the local culture. In the evening, return to your hotel for a restful night before your trekking adventure begins. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.
After an early breakfast, drive to Shana, the starting point of your trek. The drive takes you through scenic Bhutanese countryside, passing terraced fields and picturesque villages. Upon arrival in Shana, you will begin your trek, following the Paro River through a thick forest of pine, oak, and rhododendron. As you walk, you will be surrounded by the serene sounds of nature, with the occasional sighting of local wildlife, such as birds and deer.
The trail gently ascends as you make your way toward Thangthangka, a riverside campsite nestled in the foothills of the mountains. Along the way, you’ll have glimpses of the snow-capped peaks that lie ahead, building anticipation for the days to come. Overnight in a tented camp at Thangthangka.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the mountains as you continue along the Paro River, gradually ascending towards Jangothang, the base camp for Mount Jomolhari. The scenery becomes more dramatic as you leave the forest behind and enter wide open meadows surrounded by towering peaks. You’ll pass several yak herder settlements, where you can observe the nomadic lifestyle of the local people who spend their summers in these high-altitude regions.
As you approach Jangothang, the view of Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 meters) comes into full view, dominating the landscape with its imposing beauty. The base camp, situated at an elevation of around 4,080 meters, offers stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks, including Jichu Drake. Spend the evening enjoying the serenity of the mountains as the sun sets behind the snow-covered ridges. Overnight in camp at Jangothang.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, today is a rest day at Jomolhari Basecamp. There are several optional activities to keep you engaged. You can explore the nearby ridges and turquoise lakes, which provide breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the surrounding peaks. For the more adventurous, a hike up to the ridge of Tserim Kang offers a chance to witness one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in Bhutan.
Keep an eye out for wildlife, as this area is home to blue sheep, Himalayan griffons, and, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. Acclimatizing here will ensure that you’re well-prepared for the high-altitude treks ahead. Overnight in camp at Jangothang.
After breakfast, begin your ascent toward the Nyile La Pass (4,890 meters). This is one of the most challenging but rewarding days of the trek. The climb is steep, but the views from the pass are truly spectacular, offering an incredible panorama of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the surrounding mountains. Once you reach the top, take a moment to soak in the vastness of the Himalayas before descending into the valley below.
As you descend, the landscape transitions to more open pastures and rolling hills. You’ll make your way to Lingshi, a small village surrounded by mountains and home to the Lingshi Dzong, a fortress that once protected Bhutan from Tibetan invasions. Overnight in camp near Lingshi village.
Today’s trek takes you back toward Thangthangka, retracing your steps through the picturesque valleys and forests. Along the way, you’ll pass through several yak herder settlements, offering another glimpse into the traditional way of life in Bhutan’s highlands. The trail winds through alpine meadows, past bubbling streams, and into dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine.
The descent is easier on the legs, and the views of the Paro River and surrounding mountains provide a beautiful backdrop as you make your way back to camp. Overnight in camp at Thangthangka.
After breakfast, continue your descent from Thangthangka back to Shana, enjoying your final day of trekking through the beautiful Bhutanese landscape. Upon reaching Shana, you’ll be picked up for a drive back to Paro. The drive offers a chance to relax and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just completed.
Once in Paro, you’ll have some time to explore more of the town, visit local cafes, or simply unwind at your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a celebratory dinner, marking the end of your trek. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.
