Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Thimphu – Memorial Chorten and Tashichho Dzong

Arrive in Bhutan’s vibrant capital city, Thimphu, where you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, embark on a cultural tour of the city, beginning with a visit to the iconic Memorial Chorten, a revered stupa built in honor of the third king of Bhutan. The chorten is a significant spiritual site, where locals gather to pray and spin prayer wheels, immersing you in Bhutan’s deep-rooted Buddhist traditions.

In the afternoon, visit the majestic Tashichho Dzong, a grand fortress that houses both the royal government offices and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, the head abbot of Bhutan. Marvel at the architectural beauty of the dzong, set against the backdrop of lush green hills.

After the tour, spend some time exploring the charming streets of Thimphu, lined with handicraft shops, traditional cafés, and local markets. Overnight stay in a hotel in Thimphu.

Day 2Trek to Phajoding Monastery – Sunset Over Thimphu Valley

After breakfast, begin your trek to the serene Phajoding Monastery, perched high above Thimphu. The trek takes you through dense forests of pine and rhododendron, with occasional clearings that offer glimpses of the Thimphu Valley below.

Upon reaching the monastery, which sits at an altitude of 3,600 meters, take in the breathtaking views and explore the centuries-old site, which is home to a small group of monks. As evening approaches, witness a stunning sunset over the Thimphu Valley, where the city’s lights begin to twinkle in the distance. Spend the night camping near the monastery under a star-filled sky. Day 3Trek to Simkotra Tsho – High Ridges and Panoramic Mountain Views

Today’s trek takes you to Simkotra Tsho, a peaceful alpine lake set in the midst of rugged mountains. The trail winds through picturesque meadows and across high ridges, offering sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, including the distant snow-capped Himalayas. Along the way, you’ll pass by nomadic yak herder camps and may spot some of Bhutan’s unique wildlife, such as Himalayan blue sheep.

Arrive at Simkotra Tsho, where the tranquil waters reflect the towering peaks that encircle the lake. The serene atmosphere and remote location make this an ideal spot for relaxation and reflection after a day of trekking. Overnight in camp by the lake.

Day 4Cross Labana Pass – Punakha Dzong

Today, you will trek to one of the highlights of your journey: the Labana Pass, standing at 4,210 meters. The climb to the pass is challenging but rewarding, as the summit offers panoramic views of the Himalayas, including some of Bhutan’s highest peaks like Gangkar Puensum.

After crossing the pass, you’ll begin the descent into the lush Punakha Valley, known for its warmer climate and fertile landscapes. Upon reaching Punakha, visit the impressive Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically significant fortresses, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

The dzong is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, surrounded by blooming jacaranda trees in the spring. In the evening, relax in your hotel and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Overnight stay in a hotel in Punakha.

Day 5Explore Punakha Valley – Hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

Spend the day exploring the serene Punakha Valley, beginning with a visit to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning hilltop chorten that offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley and rice terraces. The hike to the chorten takes you through picturesque villages and farmlands, providing insight into Bhutanese rural life.

As you descend into the Laya Valley, you’ll encounter traditional Layap settlements, where the locals live a semi-nomadic lifestyle. The Layap people are known for their distinctive clothing and unique cultural traditions, which have remained unchanged for centuries. Overnight in camp in Laya.

Day 7Rest Day in Laya – Discover the Layap Culture

Take a well-deserved rest day in Laya, allowing you to fully explore this remote and culturally rich region. Spend the day visiting local Layap homes, interacting with the friendly residents, and learning about their way of life.

Laya offers breathtaking views of some of Bhutan’s highest peaks, including Masagang and Tsendagang, and the village is surrounded by stunning alpine scenery. In the evening, enjoy traditional Layap songs and dances, performed by the locals. Overnight in camp in Laya.

Day 8Trek through Isolated Valleys – Yak Herder Camps and Pristine Landscapes

Continue your trek through the isolated valleys of the Laya region, passing through pristine alpine landscapes and encountering yak herder camps along the way. The trail offers stunning views of rugged mountains and deep valleys, with occasional sightings of wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard.

As you trek deeper into the wilderness, the sense of isolation and tranquility grows, providing a true escape from the modern world. Overnight in camp in a remote valley.

Day 9Trek to Gasa – Relax in the Hot Springs

Trek to the remote region of Gasa, known for its natural hot springs and stunning mountain views. After a long day of trekking, relax in the Gasa hot springs, which are believed to have healing properties. The springs are nestled in a peaceful location, surrounded by nature, making it the perfect place to unwind and soothe tired muscles. Overnight in camp near Gasa.

Day 10High Passes and Remote Wilderness

Continue trekking deeper into the mountains, crossing high passes and trekking through remote wilderness areas. The journey offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks and untouched landscapes, with opportunities to see rare wildlife and enjoy the solitude of Bhutan’s backcountry. Overnight in camp in a remote location.

Day 11Descend into Bumthang – Explore Ancient Monasteries and Spiritual Sites

Today’s trek takes you into the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, the Bumthang Valley. Known for its ancient monasteries and sacred sites, Bumthang is often considered the spiritual hub of the country. Along the way, visit Kurjey Lhakhang and other monasteries that are closely tied to Bhutan’s spiritual history.

After a long day of trekking, relax in your camp and reflect on the journey. Overnight in camp in Bumthang.

Day 12Return to Thimphu – Farewell Dinner and Departure

After breakfast, take a scenic drive back to Thimphu, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a farewell dinner and reflect on your incredible journey through Bhutan’s mountains, valleys, and remote villages. The following morning, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your departure, carrying with you unforgettable memories of Bhutan’s wilderness, culture, and natural beauty.
