The trek from Gandan Monastery to Samye Monastery is the centerpiece of the trip, offering an authentic experience of Tibet’s remote highlands and breathtaking landscapes. The journey concludes with visits to Samye Monastery and Tsedang, where you’ll explore ancient palaces and historical sites before returning to Chengdu. Itinerary

Day 1Flight Kathmandu/Chengdu-Lhasa

Transfer to the airport early in the morning for your flight to Lhasa. Upon arrival at Gonggar Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to Lhasa, which is approximately a 1.5-hour drive (100 km) from the airport. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing to the high altitude of 3,650 meters. This rest day is crucial for adapting to the lower oxygen levels and preparing for the exciting days ahead in Tibet.

Day 2Lhasa

In the afternoon, visit the Jokhang Temple, a pivotal site in Tibetan Buddhism and a destination for countless pilgrims. The temple, established in 647 AD, is renowned for its ancient wooden and masonry structure. Adjacent to the temple is the lively Barkhor Market, where religious and social life converge. This vibrant marketplace offers a glimpse into daily Tibetan culture and traditions, bustling with activity and religious fervor.

Day 3Lhasa

Start your day by exploring Drepung Monastery, a significant center of the Gelukpa sect founded in 1416. This monastery once housed the Dalai Lamas and remains a major religious site. In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery, established in 1419 and renowned as an important Buddhist seminary. The monastery, known for its beautiful rose gardens and lively debates among monks, continues to be a vibrant center of learning and spiritual practice.

Day 4Drive Lhasa-Gandan

Embark on a drive to Gandan Monastery, located 45 km from Lhasa. Founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa, this monastery was the first and foremost Gelukpa monastery, built by Tsongkhapa himself. Spend the day exploring the monastery’s historical and spiritual significance, appreciating its role in the development of Tibetan Buddhism. Return to Lhasa for the evening or stay nearby depending on your preference.

Day 5Gandan – Samye Trekking (Camping)

Begin your trekking journey from Gandan to Samye, setting up camp along the way. This trek offers an immersive experience of the Tibetan landscape, with stunning views of mountains and valleys. The route takes you through traditional Tibetan terrain, providing a unique opportunity to connect with the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region. Camp overnight in the wilderness, enjoying the tranquility of the Tibetan highlands.

Day 6Gandan – Samye Trekking (Camping)

Continue your trek from Gandan to Samye, covering more distance and experiencing different aspects of the Tibetan landscape. The trek allows for exploration of remote areas, offering insights into local nomadic life and unspoiled nature. Set up camp at a suitable location along the trail, where you can rest and soak in the serene surroundings. The day’s trek provides both physical challenge and breathtaking scenery.

Day 7Gandan – Samye Trekking (Camping)

Proceed with your trekking journey from Gandan to Samye, further immersing yourself in the rugged beauty of Tibet. This segment of the trek continues to reveal stunning vistas and unique landscapes. As you reach your campsite for the night, take time to enjoy the peaceful environment and reflect on the day’s journey. The trek offers a blend of adventure and cultural exploration, deepening your connection with the region.

Day 8Gandan – Samye Trekking (Camping)

On the final leg of your trek from Gandan to Samye, make your way to the historic Samye Monastery. This day’s trek completes the journey, culminating in the arrival at one of Tibet’s most significant religious sites. Set up camp near the monastery, allowing for time to explore the site and its surroundings. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment and the beautiful views as you rest after several days of trekking.

Day 9Arrival at Samye Monastery – Tsedang

Visit Samye Monastery, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery founded in the 8th century. Explore its ancient halls and sacred relics. In the afternoon, drive to Tsedang, Tibet’s oldest city. Visit Yongbulak Palace, the legendary palace of the first Tibetan king. The palace offers historical insights and panoramic views of the surrounding region. Spend the night in Tsedang, reflecting on the historical and spiritual journey.

Day 10Drive Tsedang – Chengdu/Kathmandu

Early in the morning, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Chengdu. Enjoy the last moments of your Tibetan adventure as you travel back, carrying with you the memories of a profound and unique journey through one of the world’s most captivating regions. The return flight marks the end of this unforgettable experience, bridging the cultural and spiritual journey with the comforts of home.
