Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, our local representative will transfer you to your hotel. After some rest, your Bhutan journey begins with a visit to Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress-monastery overlooking Paro Valley. This architectural marvel holds deep historical significance and features stunning courtyards and temples, where you may observe monks in their daily rituals.
Later, take a leisurely walk through Paro town, exploring local shops, cafes, and handicraft markets. In the evening, return to your hotel for a restful night before your trekking adventure. Overnight stay in Paro.
After an early breakfast, drive through scenic countryside to Shana, the trek’s starting point. Begin your journey along the Paro River, passing through dense pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. Enjoy the serene sounds of nature and occasional wildlife sightings.
The trail gently ascends toward Thangthangka, a riverside campsite at the mountain’s foothills. Along the way, catch glimpses of snow-capped peaks, building anticipation for the trek ahead. Overnight in a tented camp at Thangthangka.
Today’s trek leads deeper into the mountains, following the Paro River toward Jangothang, the base camp for Mt. Jomolhari. Leaving the forest behind, you’ll enter vast meadows surrounded by towering peaks. Along the way, pass yak herder settlements and glimpse their nomadic lifestyle.
As you near Jangothang, the breathtaking Mt. Jomolhari (7,314m) dominates the landscape. The base camp, at 4,080m, offers stunning views of surrounding peaks like Jichu Drake. Enjoy the serene mountain sunset before an overnight stay at camp.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, today is a rest day at Jomolhari Basecamp. There are several optional activities to keep you engaged. You can explore the nearby ridges and turquoise lakes, which provide breathtaking views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the surrounding peaks. For the more adventurous, a hike up to the ridge of Tserim Kang offers a chance to witness one of the most spectacular mountain panoramas in Bhutan.
Keep an eye out for wildlife, as this area is home to blue sheep, Himalayan griffons, and, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. Acclimatizing here will ensure that you’re well-prepared for the high-altitude treks ahead. Overnight in camp at Jangothang.
After breakfast, begin your ascent toward the Nyile La Pass (4,890 meters). This is one of the most challenging but rewarding days of the trek. The climb is steep, but the views from the pass are truly spectacular, offering an incredible panorama of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the surrounding mountains. Once you reach the top, take a moment to soak in the vastness of the Himalayas before descending into the valley below.
As you descend, the landscape transitions to more open pastures and rolling hills. You’ll make your way to Lingshi, a small village surrounded by mountains and home to the Lingshi Dzong, a fortress that once protected Bhutan from Tibetan invasions. Overnight in camp near Lingshi village.
Today’s trek takes you back toward Thangthangka, retracing your steps through the picturesque valleys and forests. Along the way, you’ll pass through several yak herder settlements, offering another glimpse into the traditional way of life in Bhutan’s highlands. The trail winds through alpine meadows, past bubbling streams, and into dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine.
The descent is easier on the legs, and the views of the Paro River and surrounding mountains provide a beautiful backdrop as you make your way back to camp. Overnight in camp at Thangthangka.
After breakfast, continue your descent from Thangthangka back to Shana, enjoying your final day of trekking through the beautiful Bhutanese landscape. Upon reaching Shana, you’ll be picked up for a drive back to Paro. The drive offers a chance to relax and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just completed.
Once in Paro, you’ll have some time to explore more of the town, visit local cafes, or simply unwind at your hotel. In the evening, enjoy a celebratory dinner, marking the end of your trek. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.
