The Merak-Sakteng Hidden Valleys Trek takes you into the remote and culturally unique region of eastern Bhutan. Over the course of eight days, you’ll explore the valleys of Merak and Sakteng, home to the semi-nomadic Brokpa people. Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Trashigang – Explore Eastern Bhutan’s Cultural Hub

Arrive in Trashigang, a vibrant and bustling town often referred to as the cultural hub of eastern Bhutan. After your arrival, transfer to a local guesthouse where you can settle in and enjoy a delicious Bhutanese meal. In the afternoon, explore the lively streets of Trashigang, visiting the local markets, handicraft shops, and Trashigang Dzong, perched above the Drangme Chhu River. Overnight in a guesthouse in Trashigang.

Day 2Drive to Merak – Begin the Trek Through Merak Valley

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive from Trashigang to Merak, a remote and picturesque village known for its traditional Brokpa culture. Once you arrive, begin your trek through the Merak Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and lush forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine. The trail takes you past quaint Brokpa villages, where you will have the chance to observe the unique semi-nomadic way of life. Overnight in camp in Merak Valley.

Day 3Trek Deeper into Merak Valley – Visit Monasteries and Yak Herder Settlements

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the heart of the Merak Valley, offering breathtaking views of Bhutan’s untouched wilderness. Along the way, visit local monasteries and yak herder settlements, where the Brokpa people continue their ancient traditions of yak farming and nomadic life. You will have the opportunity to learn about their distinctive Brokpa dress, culture, and their deep connection to nature. Overnight in camp in Merak Valley.

Day 4Trek into Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary – Wildlife and Scenic Beauty

Begin your trek from Merak into the protected wilderness of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, a biodiversity hotspot that is home to rare and elusive wildlife. Trek through dense forests, crossing mountain meadows where you may spot wildlife such as the red panda, Himalayan black bear, and various species of birds. The beauty and tranquility of the forest create a magical atmosphere as you make your way to the campsite. Overnight in camp inside Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary.

Day 5Arrive in Sakteng Village – Explore the Unique Brokpa Culture

Today, arrive in the remote village of Sakteng, located within the sanctuary. Spend the day immersing yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Brokpa people, who have lived in this isolated region for centuries. Visit the village’s monasteries, learn about traditional Brokpa music and dances, and interact with the warm, welcoming locals. The Brokpa culture is distinct and deeply rooted in their semi-nomadic lifestyle. Overnight in camp in Sakteng.

Day 6Trek Through High-Altitude Pastures – Sacred Monasteries and Pilgrimage Trails

Today’s trek takes you through vast high-altitude pastures, where yak herders graze their livestock. You’ll pass by several sacred monasteries and ancient pilgrimage trails that have been used by traders and devotees for generations. The surrounding landscapes offer spectacular views of the mountains, valleys, and forests that define this region. Overnight in camp near sacred sites.

Day 7Begin Descent Back to Trashigang – Forests and Farmlands

After days of exploring the highlands, begin your descent back toward Trashigang. The trek takes you through pristine forests, with the sound of rustling leaves and mountain streams accompanying you on the trail. As you approach the lower altitudes, pass through rural farmlands and remote villages, where Bhutanese farmers practice traditional agriculture. Overnight in camp near Trashigang.

Day 8Return to Trashigang – Farewell Dinner in Paro

Return to Trashigang and enjoy your last moments in eastern Bhutan. Afterward, drive back to Paro for a relaxing evening. Before your departure, enjoy a farewell dinner where you can reflect on the incredible journey through the culturally rich and wildlife-filled landscapes of Merak and Sakteng. Overnight in a hotel in Paro.
