In the late afternoon or early evening, take a leisurely stroll through Paro town, known for its charming blend of traditional Bhutanese architecture and modern influences. You can explore local shops, visit small cafes, and immerse yourself in the town’s unique atmosphere. Return to your hotel for a relaxing evening. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.

Day 2Drive to Shana, trek to Thangthangka, passing through pine and oak forests.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, you will embark on a scenic drive towards Shana, the starting point of your trek. The drive will take you through beautiful landscapes, including fields of rice paddies, small villages, and pristine rivers. At Shana, you will begin your trek, heading through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The path winds along the Paro River, and as you ascend, you will notice the forest gradually thinning out to reveal stunning mountain vistas. By late afternoon, you will reach your campsite at Thangthangka, where, if the weather permits, you will catch your first glimpse of the majestic Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 meters). Enjoy a hearty dinner and relax under the starry sky. Overnight in a tented camp.

Day 3Trek to Jangothang (Jomolhari Basecamp). Stunning views of Mt. Jomolhari.

Following a nourishing breakfast, continue your trek along the Paro River, moving deeper into the mountains. The trail will take you past several yak herder settlements, where you can observe the local nomadic way of life. The surroundings become increasingly dramatic, with towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks in view. As you gain elevation, the vegetation changes to alpine meadows scattered with wildflowers, making for a truly picturesque setting. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Jangothang, the basecamp of Mt. Jomolhari, situated at an altitude of 4,080 meters. This campsite offers some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Settle into your camp and enjoy the serene environment. Overnight in camp.

Day 4Explore high-altitude lakes and search for signs of snow leopards.

To help your body adjust to the higher altitude, you will spend the day at Jangothang. There are plenty of exciting activities to keep you engaged during this rest day. You may explore the nearby turquoise lakes or hike up the ridges that surround the basecamp, providing stunning panoramic views of the mountains. If you’re lucky, you might even spot rare wildlife, including blue sheep, Himalayan griffons, and perhaps even the elusive snow leopard. This day is crucial for acclimatization, so take it easy and savor the beauty of your surroundings. Overnight in camp.

Day 5Trek to Lingshi, crossing high passes with panoramic mountain views.

Today’s trek is one of the most challenging yet rewarding segments of the journey. After an early breakfast, you will begin your ascent towards Nyile La Pass, which stands at an altitude of 4,890 meters. The climb is steep but offers unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks, including Jomolhari and Tsherim Gang. From the pass, descend into the Lingshi valley, where you will be greeted by sweeping vistas of rolling hills and distant villages. Lingshi is a small settlement known for its ancient fortress, which once guarded Bhutan’s borders against Tibetan invaders. Set up camp near Lingshi village, where you can interact with locals and learn about their way of life in this remote region. Overnight in camp.

Day 6Return trek to Shana.

After enjoying a final morning in the high mountains, you will begin your trek back to Shana, retracing your steps through the lush forests and along sparkling mountain streams. As you descend, the temperature becomes warmer, and the dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron return. The landscape transforms from rugged alpine terrain to more gentle, forested slopes, providing a relaxing end to your trek. This is a long day of hiking, but the beauty of the surroundings will keep you motivated as you make your way back to the trailhead. Overnight in camp.

Day 7Drive to Paro for departure.

This morning, you will be driven back to Paro, where you will have some free time to explore the town further. You might choose to visit some of Paro’s famous landmarks, such as the iconic Rinpung Dzong, a fortress that overlooks the town, or the National Museum of Bhutan, which provides fascinating insights into the country’s history and culture. Alternatively, you could simply relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the town, perhaps visiting a local café or wandering through the markets. In the evening, return to your hotel for a final night in Paro. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel in Paro.
